America had its equivalent of the royal wedding this weekend as Chelsea Clinton married Marc Mezvinsky in a £3.2 million ceremony at Astor Court in Rhinebeck, New York. It was never going to be a low-key affair, given the parents of the bride, but at approximately £6,400 a head, including £320,000 worth of flower displays and a £7,000 cake, it was a case of nothing but the best for the former first daughter. And when your Dad is the former president of the United States and your mum is the Secretary of State you can put pay to every possible interference: a temporary 1½ mile radius flight restriction zone was even was imposed overhead.
The bride wore a £16,000 strapless Vera Wang dress with an embellished waistband and a long veil. She walked down the aisle with a rather trim looking Bill before saying her vows to Jewish banker Marc under a flower-covered gazebo. The couple then recited the words of Leo Mark's poem, All That I Have.
A smattering of celebrities were rumoured to have attended, including Ted Danson, Stephen Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Whoopi Goldberg and Tom Hanks. America's sweetheart Oprah Winfrey and current president Barack Obama were notably not in attendance. Guests were certainly well looked after, with £320,000 set aside for transporting them to the event, £130,000 on security and £10,000 on some rather smart portaloos.
Congratulations go to another bride who also got married in Vera Wang over the weekend. Singer Alicia Keys tied the knot with long-term boyfriend Swiss Beatz (real name Kasseem Dean) in a private ceremony on the island of Corsica. While the groom wore a white retro tux and a pink shirt, Alicia opted for a long white draped goddess gown from Vera Wang (perfect for framing her growing baby bump) and a complementary jewelled headband.
