According to the BBC, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that the plaintiffs asked "for equal dignity in the eyes of the law" before confirming that "The Constitution grants them that right."
Alongside elated tweets from celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres, the White House changed its Twitter avatar to a rainbow design.
Barack Obama also took to Twitter to celebrate, commenting; "Today is a big step in our march toward equality. Gay and lesbian couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else. #LoveWins"
