Creative Director Hannah Coffin talks inspo, bestsellers and 2016 plans

Since launching in 2013, the ultra-covetable British label Needle & Thread has become known for devilishly intricate embellishment in buy-me-now silhouettes. So when we heard they were launching a bridal collection our wed-radar went into overdrive. We caught up with Creative Director Hannah Coffin to find out what makes the brand tick, her inspiration behind the latest collection and plans for 2016.

How long had you been working on this first bridal collection?

Adding a bridal collection alongside our ready-to-wear lines was actually a very organic decision for the brand. We knew our client was already choosing Needle & Thread for her special moments, such as her graduation, prom or even her best friend's wedding. The decision came to us very quickly, as a response to our client's shopping behaviours. To be able to offer her a piece for the biggest day of her life has been so exciting for myself and my team.

How many pieces are currently available and what will this increase to in 2016?

Our debut collection features 17 styles ranging from romantic gowns and maxi dresses, to more contemporary separates with embellished crop tops and high-waisted tulle skirts, all with our trademark combination of intricate embellishment with a sophisticated colour palette and sensitive design. For 2016 we've taken our inspiration from Victorian lace detailing and fresh floral motifs and we've expanded the collection to have more statement gowns and elevated special pieces.

What is already proving to be hugely popular?

The response to our bridal collection has been just amazing. The Coppelia Ballet dress (pictured, £130) has always been a signature style for the brand and has remained one of the most popular styles in this collection. This style is available in a beautiful range of colours including Vintage Chalk and Ballet Pink which makes it perfect for bridesmaids.


Our tulle pieces have also become something we are being recognised for, and the tulle separates in this collection have proven highly popular for the modern bride. The more contemporary separates on offer in this collection, such as the Rose Motif and Floral Gloss top, have also received a really strong reaction - it is great to be able to offer something to the less traditional bride who may want something that she can wear again. Our trademark embellished gowns and dresses are also very much part of this collection and are very popular with brides-to-be; they are beautifully embellished pieces at accessible price points.

What was the inspiration behind the brand?

The concept for this collection focuses around our bride being able to wear a piece from the Needle & Thread bridal collection for all the different elements that surround the big day - there's the rehearsal dinner, the ceremony, the reception, even the special dress for the first dinner on honeymoon - and she wants to be able to wear something different for each part. We also wanted to provide her with something different for her destination wedding, and we believe the collection really works with a more relaxed theme.  


I launched Needle & Thread because I wanted to offer her beautifully made, sophisticated pieces, with as much decoration as possible, and at an accessible price point. I always felt that this was something not currently available in the current market. The collections take their inspiration from the English rose garden, coupled with the traditional Indian decoration and embroidery, celebrating femininity in the contemporary landscape. The engineering behind each piece really is the DNA of the brand, and it is here that the customers' style and shape has truly been considered.

Any further ambitions for the bridal label moving into next year?

Our next bridal collection will be available in Spring 2016 and will develop in size and style offering. The next collection builds on the brands signature pieces, and brings in some really exciting and contemporary new designs.
