The nation's darling Cheryl Cole has been named the new face of L'Oreal haircare - and quite frankly, she really is worth it, because if there's one thing every woman wants right now it's a head-full of those luscious chocolate locks. Every stylist I've met tells me their number one request is a "Cheryl": big, bouncy, smooth curls with a cocoa/caramel/plum gleam. So while I can't really mix you up a pot of virtual hair tint, here are a few tips on getting that va-va-volume:
- When washing your hair, don't use too much conditioner: it makes the hair fairly unresponsive to styling, so only apply it at the tips.
- Rough dry with a blow-dryer and brush out any knots
- When the hair is just about dry, spritz all over (including the roots) with a blow-dry volumising lotion. Good ones are L'Oreal Tecni Art Thickening Blow Dry Lotion (at www.amazon.co.uk) or John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Blow Dry Lotion (at www.boots.com)
- Flip your head over, but do this standing up as you want the hair to drop straight down towards the floor.
- With a round barrel brush, scoop up a section of hair, twirl it up to the roots and blast it with the hair dryer. Keep blasting as you unroll the hair so that the entire length is smooth and dry, all the while pulling slightly to make the hair straight.
- Carry on across the entire head (I find that going from ear to ear makes life much easier - you can see which sections have been styled)
- Stand back up: WOW! Hello sexy!
- Brush the hair lightly to untangle any knots.
- Take a large section of hair at the very top of your head (imagine you're a puppet on a string, grab the hair where your string would be attached)
- Brush it smooth, then give it another spritz of lotion. Wrap it backwards around the barrel brush, pull upwards and blast the living daylights out of it, especially at the roots and behind. If you have lots of hair, maybe do this in two sections. The idea is to create height at the roots - the bigger the better!
- Do the same with the front of your hair - either forwards or backwards depending on how you like it to land.
- Spray with hairspray (L'Oreal Elnett is THE BEST)
- Voila! Now go on, say it: "Because I'm worth it!"

But it does take so long to blow dry long hair. Also that elnett hairspray always smells so toxic to me. It's awful. Maybe i'll hold my nose when i use it. Long hair is great but such a time consuming thing if your a busy mum like me or rushing out to get to work on time. Men have it so easy, grrrr !!
Trust me I know where you're coming from - I have uber long hair (down to my elbows) and yes it does take a long time - but I'll gladly donate that extra 5 minutes if it means I leave the house feeling hair-happy! If you're extra rushed, a good trick for wavy summer hair is to rough dry it all over, brush through the knots and platt it down to the ends. Leave it for an hour or so then unravel. It's a good way to give long shapeless hair a bit of style without spending ages with a hairdyer!
