How To Do Your Own Wedding Makeup

How To Do Your Own Wedding Makeup

Before thinking about wedding make up, it's important to get your skin looking its best on your big day. There are four key principles to stick to: cleanse, exfoliate, feed and hydrate it. Invest in a good cleanser, natural exfoliator, serum and moisturiser that you can use in the run up to your wedding to make it look its best. Applying your own makeup on your wedding day? Follow our step-by-step guide to getting the perfect bridal look.

1. On your wedding morning, start with your usual cleansing routine, finishing up with your moisturiser.

2. The base is everything. Prime your skin using one that will blur out imperfections and create a smooth base for your foundation.

3. Now's the time to correct and conceal. Use a colour correcting stick to even out any redness and a concealer to hide any dark shadows under the eyes and buff with a blending brush.

4. Follow your concealer with your foundation. Apply with your fingertips, pressing in to your skin in circular motions. For that airbrushed look, we love using a beauty sponge (our favourite is the Beautyblender original, £16, boots.com) to really work the product into your skin and to lift off any excess.

5. Now: set! Use a setting powder, particularly around your T-Zone, will keep your makeup put for even longer. To avoid any cake-y ness, use a translucent powder with a brush or puff concentrating on those shinier areas.

6. Brows are key to framing your face but no one wants the #InstaBrow on their wedding day. Comb through your eyebrow with a spoolie wand followed by a little colour to enhance your natural brow. Then, to set, have a clear gel (like Bobbi Brown's Natural Brow Shaper in clear, £17, bobbibrown.co.uk) on hand to keep them looking tame all day.

7. Add a bit of colour to the face with a matte bronzer (we love Benefit Hoola bronzing powder, £23.50, benefitcosmetics.co.uk), applied in any places where the sun would naturally hit (top of the cheekbone, temples, across the forehead, over the ears). Sweep over in long, circular motions to avoid any streaks.

8. A pink blusher (as opposed to coral or orange) offers the most natural flush, which you'll need to look healthy and glowing on your wedding day. Using a blusher blush, swirl onto the apples of the cheeks, blending back to meet your bronzer.

9. If you like a dewy finish, now it's time for a highlighter. Whether you're going for a cream or powder-based formula, apply across the highest points of the cheek, down the nose and in the cupid's bow for the perfect pout.

10. Moving onto the eyes, start with your eyeshadow, followed by a liner, finished off with a few coats of mascara to open up the eyes (Clinique Lash Power, £19, clinique.co.uk is one of our favourites).

11. Finish off with your lip colour, making sure to blot with a tissue for the best staying power (you don't want it all to end up on his lips).
