Safari doesn't have to mean Africa, and in the heart of the Indian jungle, at the gate to the Kanha National Park, sits magical Banjaar Tola.

This vast expanse of grassy meadows and lush bamboo forests was the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, and is home to tigers, leopards and sloth bears.

At this luxury camp, 18 tented suites sit along the banks of the Banjaar river, each with a veranda suspended over the flowing water below. Inside, you'll find bamboo walls, polished wooden floors and Indian textiles.

The park itself is just across the river and you can head out to spot wildlife by jeep or by elephant. Between drives or rides, relax by the pool, sip lassis (spiced yoghurt drinks) in the shade or join one of the camp's excursions to discover local village life.

WOW FACTOR: A delicious Indian feast, served in the middle of the forest.

FLIGHT TIME: 8 hours

GO: Greaves Travel (www.greavesindia.co.uk) offers four nights (plus one night in Mumbai due to flight connections), full-board, from £3,399 per person. Includes flights, transfers and all game excursions by jeep and elephant.

With bamboo floors, luxurious en suites and king-sized beds on raised plinths, the nine tented suites at Banjaar Tola are the ultimate in camping cool.

The bed faces glass doors that open onto a veranda suspended above the Banjaar River.

The gate to Kanha National Park - at 1,945 sq km one of the largest in India, with forest, meadows and an abundance of wildlife - is 10 minutes away.

Between dawn and twilight game drives or elephant rides, you can relax by the pool or take a cultural excursion for a rare experience of timeless Indian village life.

Wow factor: This destination combines the best Indian jungle experiences with chic luxury and a good chance of seeing tigers.
