Real glamourpusses wouldn't consider having a Riviera honeymoon without spending a few nights in Monaco. The tiny principality is packed with first-rate hotels, but our vote has to go to the Fairmont - thanks to its fabulous rooftop pool, which overlooks the sea on one side and the famous Grand Prix hairpin turn on the other.

You must book a table for two on the balcony at the Fairmont's L'Horizon for at least one meal. Chef Maryan Gandon's food is superb and the views of the Med are unbeatable, especially when a mega-yacht sails past.

After dark, stroll down through the Grand Prix tunnel to the port and Monaco's hottest new nightspot, Black Legend, owned by the folks behind Saint-Tropez's iconic Les Caves du Roy.

Wow factor: The rooftop pool.

Flight time: From two hours to Nice, then a seven-minute helicopter transfer with Heli Air Monaco (from £83; heliairmonaco.com).
