While divine desert islands offer a magical honeymoon, there's always the restriction of not being able to move beyond their sandy diameter. By day four you might want to do a little exploring. If so, you'll love Baja California.
This peninsula jutting out from the west of Mexico has beautiful beaches and great weather, but also heritage identity: think bright colours, cactus plantations, cold Coronas and mischievous margaritas.
Las Ventanas is Baja's most famous resort. The decor is exactly what you want in such a hot country - white, fresh, cool and calm, with a stunning pool and shady eating areas. Bedrooms are huge, light and breezy with stone floors, wood furnishings, an immense bathroom and a private plunge pool.
But don't stop there; a fabulous spa, a tequila-tasting bar, a fine-dining restaurant and laid-back beach bar (with stools inside the pool) will keep you busy.
On those itchy-feet days, grab your sun hat and hire a convertible from the hotel. Visit nearby Cabo San Lucas (touristy, but good for boat trips and diving), or the more authentic San José del Cabo. Better yet, get a taste of the countryside and drive an hour north to Todos Santos, a small town known for its arts and crafts souvenir shops. And if you fancy a change from Tex-Mex food, search out the secret-gem Italian restaurant Café Santa Fe for simple salads, seafood and pastas.
At the end of the day, you'll still be grateful to have Las Ventanas' blissful haven to come home to.
Wow factor: Whale-watching
