A longstanding celebrity favourite, Le Bristol is a haven of peace and old-world grandeur, located on über-fashionable Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

Every star from Marilyn Monroe to George Clooney has stayed here, and it's easy to see why. Le Bristol prides itself on being a 'family' place (complete with a friendly pet cat, Fa-raon, who roams freely). For a real treat, stay in one of the hotel's suites, each of which has something unique to offer. The honeymoon suite has a private view of the Eiffel Tower. Dine at 114 Faubourg, a street-front bistro (one of two Michelin-starred eateries), then head to the bar for some of the hotel's signature cocktails, served with an array of sexy dark-chocolate treats; their Old Fashioned is not to be missed.

WOW FACTOR The rooftop pool, designed by the Onassis yachtmaker Cäsar Pinnau to look like a sailboat's interior. After a swim, take in the view of the Sacré Coeur from the sundeck.

JOURNEY TIME From UK, flight: 1hr. Eurostar: 2hrs 15min.

As soon as your chauffeur meets you on the Eurostar platform at Gare du Nord, you are transported into the Le Bristol way of life.

After whizzing through the Paris streets in the back of a blacked-out Mercedes, you step out into the chandelier-studded foyer and are greeted by name like a favoured guest.

The Honeymoon Suite is elegant and enormous, the white-marble bathroom a whopping 38 paces long, with the Eiffel Tower twinkling at you from your balcony. But never fear. The less eye-wateringly costly rooms are just as squeal-worthy and still have those marble bathrooms.

Even your breakfast granola is sprinkled with gold leaf, while the restaurants share four Michelin stars between them (a prestigious trois for Epicure).

But for all its classic elegance, Le Bristol is not in a time warp. The lobby bar, with its in-house DJ, attracts a glamorous crowd and is the perfect start - or end - to any night.

WOW FACTOR: The hotel has its own cat: Fa-raon. No mere moggie here, oh no, but a super-cute pedigree Birman.

FLIGHT TIME: 1 hour.

GO: Double rooms cost from £810 while British Airways return flights start from £130.

A favourite among magazine editors (it's fully booked during fashion week), it boasts a three-Michelin-star restaurant as well as a more laid-back brasserie, plus an indoor swimming pool with rooftop views of urban Paris and a must-visit spa.

Fashionistas can even enjoy a Fashion High Tea, viewing the latest collections by some of the city's most famous fashion houses over delicious pastries and designer cakes.

WOW FACTOR: The huge marble bathrooms are among the largest in Paris and come complete with Hermès bathrobes.
