Fresh from a six-month upgrade, the 60 villas at Banyan Tree Seychelles are zingier, the restaurants breezier, and the marble floors gleaming.

Of course, the setting needs no improvements: the Indian Ocean lapping at Intendance Bay is just as sparklingly clear and the golden sand as perfectly soft as it always was.

Our pick of the colonial-style villas are the Hillside ones, which make the most of the views as, to be honest, you won't be leaving your haven all that often.

Try to drag yourself away for a day trip at least once to the neighbouring island of Praslin to visit the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Vallée de Mai, and look out for the coco de mer 'love nut' - named for its suggestive shape.

If that's put you in the mood for romance, head to fine-dining Chez Lamar for a gastro Creole fish curry or arrange for a private dinner by the pool in the Presidential Suite (even if you can't splash out to stay there). It's quite simply romance on a plate.

WOW FACTOR: The hilltop Banyan Tree Spa isn't award-winning for nothing. Book a two-therapist Harmony Banyan treatment for utter bliss.

Sat on the glorious sweep on Mahé's Intendance Bay, Banyan Tree is just the place for a grown-up version of hide and seek; simply retreat to your pool villa, one of 60 either around the golden-sand bay or scattered down the hillside, for the ultimate in 'we-time'.

When you need a change from the colonial-style interiors, seek sanctuary in the multi-award-winning Banyan Tree Spa, where eight hilltop pavilions are surrounded by chirping tropical forest.

Try the two-therapist Harmony Banyan treatment - sure to put you back in balance after the long flight. Make sure you venture out and take a day trip to neighbouring Praslin to visit the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Vallée de Mai and look for the famous coco de mer 'love nut' - named for its suggestive shape! Back on home turf, choose between fine dining at Chez Lemar, Thai at Saffron or African-inspired cuisine at Au Jardin d'Epices.

WOW FACTOR: Although you can walk straight out onto the sand from the Beachfront Villas, it's the views from the Hillside ones that will blow your mind.
