It simply doesn't get more south-of-france swanky than Crillon Le Brave, an exquisitely restored crop of 17th-century buildings in a charming French village that traces its roots back to a Roman settlement.
This place is gastronomic heaven. Daytime activities include rustic lunches, cooking demonstrations and tours of markets, and wine tastings at the nearby Domaine du Tix and Châteauneuf du Pape.
For a unique foodie excursion, book on to a three-day truffle-hunting course with resident expert Eric Jaumard, which includes a cooking demonstration in Crillon Le Brave's kitchens.
As the sun sets, take a stroll through the village's cobbled streets for dinner, or enjoy a truly gastronomic experience at a secluded table on the hotel's terrace, feasting on locally sourced delicacies to the sounds of a live band.
WOW FACTOR: Sampled every dish twice already? The chefs are more than happy for you to give them a challenge and order off menu (more truffles!).

The drive from Avignon station to Crillon Le Brave may take you past pretty villages and vineyards, but still nothing can prepare you for your arrival at this exquisite hilltop hotel.
Over the past couple of decades, what was originally a single building has spread to become a mini-village of stone houses converted into spacious suites with terracotta-tiled floors and views to die for.
If you can tear yourself away from the vista, visit the sprawling terrace for breakfast, and the fine dining restaurant with an epic wine list. A 10-minute drive away is the village of Carpentras.
Grab bread and cheese at the Friday market for a DIY Gallic picnic, buy freshly dug truffles or book a table at Chez Serge, a gorgeous little bistro with a set truffle-based menu dishing up as much of the black stuff as you can handle for 75 euros.
WOW FACTOR: Wine lovers will be in heaven. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Beaumes de Venise and other wineries are only short drives away.
TRAVEL TIME: 6 hours by train.
