Picture a desert-island beach with your dream villa raised on stilts over brilliant blue water and you're not even close to the beauty of this resort.
Polynesia's 118 islands are scattered across the South Pacific, and Bora Bora is the jewel that epitomises far-flung paradise. As you step from the plane, you're led to a boat that transports you to the three interlinked coral islets over which the hotel is built.
Your thatched overwater bungalow is a zen space with a wide sundeck. While there are many activities to tempt you - diving with manta rays, shopping for black pearls, cruising in the catamaran - when you're lying in a double hammock, staring out at the shore, the most you may end up doing is lifting your cocktail.
WOW FACTOR: Follow the lead of Victoria Beckham and head to the spa to experience the skin-soothing Kahaia Haven ritual, a two-hour scrub, massage and facial bliss fest.

Staring up at a star-strewn sky from the deck of your over-water bungalow, it's easy to feel you are in paradise. At Four Seasons Bora Bora, 100 over-water bungalow suites stretch out over an azure lagoon. Sliding doors give them a Zen open-plan feel and outside the tiered balcony is the perfect diving board into the warm waters below.
The resort is built on three interlinking motus (small islands on the outer coral reef) with great views of Mount Otemanu, the highest peak of the central island. The resort's cathedral-like spa has 40ft-high atrium ceilings that will bliss you out before your rubdown has begun. There is a thatched chapel that's perfect for weddings and, behind the white sands, a swimming pool surrounded by palms, coral sculptures, thatched day beds and three restaurants.
Away from the pool, the snorkelling and diving is sublime - you can dive with four-metre-long lemon sharks and eagle rays - or explore the islands by foot or 4x4. As the sun sets, a Polynesian band serenades you as you sip champagne before dinner on the water's edge. Then it's back to your bungalow to dream of the stars.
WOW FACTOR: The views of the lagoon from the bath.
