It's not every day that you can say you slept in the same bed as Barack Obama, but if you book into the newly opened five-star Schloss Elmau Retreat, 60 miles south of Munich, there's every chance you'll be cosying up in the same suite used by Mr Pres during this year's G7.
It's safe to say that the standards here are darn high. The 47-suite Retreat is a five-minute walk from its big sister resort and her first-class facilities, yet this 'hotel within a hotel' feels wonderfully peaceful - and is ideal for couples. And with its own spa and restaurants, there's really no need to step foot outside The Retreat itself.
Book in at the yoga centre for a class with one of the world's leading visiting yogis. Then unwind with a massage at the exclusive-use Shantigiri Spa with its 20-metre saltwater pool, ice plunge pool and steam bath.
Food is also a big deal here, and not the calorie-counting kind. Post spa day, head to the Summit restaurant and indulge in a choice of tasty (yes, really) vegan Thai delights.
WOW FACTOR: The floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Wetterstein Mountains in The Retreat's Finnish sauna.

Nestled in the foothills of the Wetterstein mountain range, Schloss Elmau is loved by the über-healthy jet-set.But forget droopy lettuce leaves and agonising Spin classes; think Michelin-starred cuisine and invigorating alfresco activities (horseriding, tobogganing, and ice skating to name a few).
This five-star Bavarian castle has 130 rooms and suites, as well as six restaurants. But it's the spa that is the real pull. Spilling over four floors, with five pools, some of which are outdoors, you can while away days here without repeating the same class (Tai Chi, yoga, Pilates) or treatment. The Badehaus Spa is the place to chill. Run with Teutonic efficiency, the dark wood and deep red décor hints at an ancient Eastern influence while the panoramic views over those mountains are spectacular.
WOW FACTOR Night-time skinny-dips - Germans don't shy away from spa-ing au naturel - in the outdoor pool (a balmy 36 degrees) as the snow falls around you.
