Udaipur simply radiates romance. Founded in 1559, it has seen successive rulers add their own extravagant glamour, creating a unique destination that has enchanted lovers for centuries.
Temples, bathing ghats (riverside steps), bazaars, palaces and island pavilions surround the sapphire blue of Lake Pichola, and on its western shore are the champagne-coloured domes and cupolas of The Oberoi Udaivilas.
Designed as a Rajasthani palace, it is unique among hotels in Udaipur thanks to its lavish landscaped gardens (mini wildlife sanctuary included) and large bedrooms - it's also the only one to offer private pool villas.
Arrive by boat to a royal welcome and, as rosebuds fall from the terrace, you'll feel as if you have stepped into a storybook romance.
Book for autumn's Diwali festival, when the city is at its most active, with a fireworks display on the lake.
Wow Factor: Dine à deux on your own private pontoon, bobbing blissfully on Lake Pichola as the stars come out.
GO: Cox & Kings (www.coxandkings.co.uk) offers three nights at The Oberoi Udaivilas and one night at The Oberoi New Delhi from £1,675, B&B. Includes flights and transfers.
FLIGHT TIME: 11 hours via Delhi

No trip to India is complete without a visit to Udaipur, and no trip to Udaipur is complete without a stay at the Udaivilas, a fantasy Indian palace that's all shimmering cream façades, decorative domes, fountains and OTT opulence.
Although relatively new, it feels like it's been the home of maharajas for centuries. Plump for an outside room with a 'semi-private' plunge pool that's actually an off-shoot of the giant one which snakes round the whole thing like a moat.
Do take time to venture across Lake Pichola to the city's antique palaces, temples and bazaars; and, while there, a sunset shikara ride (a bit like a gondola), with a bottle of fizz and some Rajasthani canapés, is a must.
WOW FACTOR: A private yoga lesson overlooking Lake Pichola is an unforgettable experience - even for the least flexible.
FLIGHT TIME: 14 hours.
GO: Greaves Travel www.greavesindia.co.uk offers seven nights in Rajasthan, including five nights at The Oberoi Udaivilas, from £1,815 per person. Includes flights and transfers.
