Discerning travel bible Condé Nast Traveller has just released its Hot List 2010, covering the 66 coolest new hotels in the world. Out of those 66, The Scarlet in Cornwall has made it as one of the top five destinations for honeymooners...

Wind uphill past the undistinguished bungalows of Mawgan Porth on the North Cornwall coast (six miles from Newquay airport), pull up at The Scarlet's low-key entrance and prepare, from the moment you step inside for a thrilling sight: the golden sands, framed by looming cliffs, of vast, romantic Mawgan Porth beach sweeping toward the rolling Atlantic surf. Built to harmonise with its surroundings, this multi-level new eco hotel has flat roofs covered in sea thrift and rocks to resemble cliff tops, and infinity-edged pools that seem to reach to the sea. The outdoor pool extends from the indoor one, punctuated by two bright-scarlet, wood-fired hot tubs set between boulders overlooking the ocean. Downstairs is the spa, specialising in Ayurvedic 'journeys', with pods suspended in the dark for deep relaxation and another sun-drenched room for light relaxation. The 37 bedrooms, ranging from smaller Just Right rooms to huge Indulgent ones, are arranged in clusters, all with sea views. Although green, and The Scarlet most definitely is, from its biomass boiler to its Europe-only wine list, there's no sense of a hair-shirt approach. Once inside the adult-only sanctuary the feeling is one of sybaritic relaxation. Staff, clad in baggy linen trousers, are motivated and kind and chef Ben Tunnicliffe's food is very good indeed.
