The Lake District is an idyllic beauty spot with picturesque meadows, the highest mountains in England, and magnificent lakes and waterfalls - making it ideal for a romantic getaway.
Gilpin Hotel and Lake House - a member of Relais & Châteaux - is a quiet country house hotel, surrounded by 20 acres of private land. The enchanting lodge is run by the Cunliffe family who have been at the property since 1919.
The lodge has just 20 guestrooms, each elegantly decorated with exquisite wallpaper and beautiful furnishings; the Garden Suites offer the ultimate luxury for two - a private decking area with a submerged cedar wood hot tub.
The latest addition to Gilpin, a hidden sanctuary called The Lake House (pictured), is set on a stunning four-acre private lake with boat house and boat, and is surrounded by woodland and hills. It comprises six suites designed by Christine Cunliffe along with award-winning interior designer Sarah-Jane Neilson and a simple spa with a traditional sauna and an indoor swimming pool, which looks out onto the lake. In the evening, guests are picked up by a chauffeur and taken to the hotel's restaurant where chef Russell Plowman heads the kitchen.
Plowman - who previously worked at Michelin star restaurants Waterside Inn at Bray and L'Ortolan in Berkshire - uses the best ingredients, sourced from local suppliers. His seasonal menus have won him acclaim, with foodies travelling from all over the country to sample his modern English cuisine.
If you can bear to leave the comfort of your room - the in-room spa treatments make it tempting to stay inside all day - there are plenty of outdoor activities for active newlyweds, including horse riding, sailing and walking. To book, call 00 44 01539 488 818 or visit www.gilpinlodge.co.uk.
