Time difference: GMT +5 hours, although many resorts operate on 'island time' (plus an extra hour) to make sunset at a cocktail-friendly hour.

Who flies: British Airways, direct from London, Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Oman Air via Muscat, Etihad via Abu Dhabi.

Transfers: Depending on which island you choose for your honeymoon hot spot you will be whisked away on a speed boat or traditional Maldivian sea plane -the most romantic way to travel.

Currency: Maldivian Rufiya, although most resorts quote prices in US dollars.

Language: Dhivehi. English is widely spoken but try 'shukuriyaa' which means 'thank you.'
