Kendra Leaver, 27, Brides retail editor & events director, married RN Lieutenant Joshua Rylah, 28, at St Mary's Church in Rye, East Sussex followed by a reception at her parents' house on 3rd September 2016. She says:

Our wedding was a two-day event. We had the ceremony and reception on the Saturday, while on the Sunday we had a big barbecue with friends and family.

Getting married at my parents' home made the day even more special. Josh and I were involved from start to finish in all the preparations, such as re-landscaping the garden, decorating the house and collecting rose petals for the confetti. We even found a Second World War bunker in the grounds, which we used as a gin bar!

Working at Brides, I'm surrounded by gorgeous bridal gowns, but when it came to dress shopping I only tried on one dress knowing it was The One - Caroline Castigliano's 'Andrea' design. The cut, structure and lace detailing were amazing.

Marrying a naval officer meant it was a very trad English wedding. We had a military exit out of the church, London buses to transport guests to the house and we only used English suppliers.

Being by the sea, we had mini fish and chips canapés. For our main meal we had baked camembert, followed by pork belly with Mediterranean vegetables and a trio of desserts to finish.

My top tip: If you're marrying at home, be sure to plant flowers so that they bloom exactly at the time of your wedding.
