Miriam Phillips, 29, married Jon Bell, 30, on Mawgan Porth Beach, Cornwall, followed by a reception at Bedruthan Stephs Hotel in April 2013. She says:

"Our vision of the perfect wedding changed dramatically after our first child was born last year - instead of a formal do we now wanted a laid-back and child-friendly day. We chose to marry at Mawgan Porth Beach because we have a holiday home there and love the beautiful views."

"We had a humanist ceremony on the beach under a wooden arch made by my stepfather. The most meomirable part of the day was walking down the cliff with my father and seeing all our guests below."

"Because we only had a three-month engagement, most designers couldn't make a dress in that time. Eventually, a boutique agreed to create an ivory version of one of its red bridesmaid dresses."

"We did the flowers ourselves. We bought pre-cut blooms from a florist and arranged them in jam jars. By coincidence, Dawn French got married at Mawgan Porth the weekend before us and used the same florist."

"Rather than having a formal wedding breakfast, we had a gourmet barbecue and, instead of champagne, we served cider."

"We worked hard to keep to a budget, and spent about £7,000. I learned that everything can be negotiated or adapted."

"My top tip: If you are doing something different, tell your guests exactly what to expect. Including information about the dress code is especially helpful."
