Christine Soo, 35, married Ryan Cheng, 36, at The Kingscote Barn, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, on 13 June 2014. She says:

We love wide, open spaces and really wanted the English countryside to be the backdrop to our day. We decided to take a huge gamble and opt for an outdoor ceremony - luckily it paid off because the weather on the day itself was gorgeous.

Both our families come from Singapore and most of our guests had never been to a British wedding before. We tried to incorporate as many mixed traditions as possible. We had a Chinese tea ceremony the day before the wedding, and the reception, in a barn in the middle of the Cotswolds, couldn't have been more English!

We used fortune cookies as a cute alternative to a seating plan - guests found their name, then broke theirs open to reveal the table at which they were sitting.

I made all of the wedding stationery myself - it was a great way of keeping costs down. Everyone loved the paddle fan service programmes so it was worth the effort.

Choosing the food was a huge priority because Ryan and I are avid foodies. We served smoked chicken with French beans for starters, followed by duck with tartiflette.

As we were pronounced man and wife Ryan took out his iPhone and snapped our first married 'selfie' - the surprise from the guests and registrar was priceless!

My top tip: If you're planning on making all your decorations then make sure that you give yourself enough time. Believe me - it takes much longer than you think it will!
