Madeline Petersen, 28, married Brian Bergeson, 30, at Glensheen Mansion, in Minnesota, in the US, in September 2012. She says:

"We had a neutral colour palette with chevron prints in different hues of grey. Then we introduced purple tones using flowers and the flower girl dresses.

I wore a two-piece Oscar de le Renta gown. The mermaid-cut skirt was originally designed in black and I loved knowing there were only two stores worldwide that had it stocked in ivory.

We bought chevron-print ties from Etsy for our bar staff and waiters to coordinate with the theme. Every detail was important to make our day perfect.

We had a separate, smaller tent for a lounge area, in which we served coffee and cocktails. Our wedding planner created a feature wall with family photos and cutout frames, for guests to pose behind and have their photo taken.

We planned the wedding for almost two years and, despite the cold weather, it went without a hitch! Because I work in the bridal industry, I tried to find things I hadn't seen before and use custom elements, such as the bespoke bow ties for the bridal party.

The most memorable part of the day was having our photographs taken next to Lake Superior just as the sun set. Although both the photographer and videographer were there all the time, it felt like it was just the two of us.

My top tip: Always start with the guest list. Knowing how many people might attend will help hugely when meeting suppliers and making key decisions."
