As couples get more into DIY-ing their big day, flower farms are becoming a popular wedding-flower option. British, seasonal and quite affordable, we think farm-grown wedding flowers are a great option if you're hosting a rustic, countryside or low-key wedding. Plus, many flower farms also host workshops and offer other clever extras which help you to grow or make your own wedding-day flowers. Get those green fingers ready.
Below, discover some of our favourite British flower farms and why they're awesome.
Common Farm Flowers
Common Farm Flowers in Somerset is no stranger to teaching engaged flower lovers how to make beautiful arrangements themselves. The nine-year-old farm supplies fresh, scented blooms for weddings all over the UK. As well offering a full flower service (design, creation and installation for events), Common Farm Flowers hosts hands-on workshops in the Barn Flower Studio, in which you learn how to plan and design, grow, care for, cut and arrange your own wedding flowers.
"In our cut-flower patches we grow species that you’d find in a good garden, rather than in a flower shop. Throughout their season we have umbellifers galore, scented sweet peas, roses, dahlias... In fact, we grow about 250 different varieties of cut flowers and foliage throughout the season, and use about a 250,000 cut stems in our floristry throughout each year."
"If we are asked to provide what we call the Full Fragonard (our design, creation and installation service), involving vanloads of flowers and lots of staff working long hours, then our prices reflect that work. For a fraction of the cost you can grow and arrange your own flowers – spending time where you would otherwise spend money. That's why we offer a comprehensive workshop for those who want to learn all our expert tips – right from the ground up! Obviously some people have neither the desire, nor time, nor garden in which to grow their own wedding flowers, so we also have a midway offering of sorts. We supply DIY buckets of flowers to people who’d like to supplement what they’ve grown, or who are keen to arrange but don’t trust their gardening skills. Couples often ask for a bit of both: DIY buckets to put together little arrangements here and there, while we're asked to create the bridal party's bouquets, buttonholes and any other complicated installations that customers might not be confident creating themselves."
Green & Gorgeous
Green & Gorgeous in Oxfordshire has worked with many couples to help create their wedding flowers. Owner Rachel offers 'garden visits' to her clients, when they can wander through the cutting beds a week before the big day, choose their own selection and be closely involved in the design process. Green & Gorgeous offers customers lots of helpful courses, including how to cultivate a garden and how to make breathtaking flower arrangements. Wedding packages range from buckets of cut stems (chosen by you) to a full floristry service on the day of your wedding.
"Our flowers are grown in tune with the seasons and picked at their best for uncompromising freshness and quality. They are full of character, scent and, some people say, soul. Each week captures a fleeting floral moment – from the froth and delicacy of spring to the rich, velvet textures of autumn."
"Flower farms embrace the DIY bride who wants to have her own creative input. Our helpful growing and floristry courses are a great way to start this journey. During our peak flowering months between June and September, we happily provide buckets of flowers and foliage – carefully chosen to complement a couple's colour palette and big-day vibe, which they can take away and arrange themselves. Our Buckets & Bouquets service is popular, and allows customers to choose how much floristry they want to do themselves, leaving us to design and arrange everything else. For anyone who simply loves our farm and the sustainable homegrown approach, but doesn't want to make their own flowers, Green & Gorgeous can take care of everything – All Arranged, from buttonholes to grand floral archways."
Wild Bunch is set in an appropriately enchanting location, nestled in the foothills of the Welsh mountains at the meeting place between the ancient counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Powys. At Wild Bunch, couples, along with family or friends, can sign up to seasonal flower workshops (perfect for learning what's in bloom on the date of your wedding) and how to include the healthiest, most beautiful flowers in your day.
"Because we work with seasonal flowers, picking whatever is at its peak on the day, exactly what brides will get in their bouquets (etc.) will depend on the whims of Mother Nature, so couples need to be prepared to let go of any rigid expectations! Although we can’t always predict exactly what will be available in six months’ time, nature never fails to deliver an awe-inspiring bounty of flowers, foliage, fruit, branches and other foraged items. This, by definition, means that your wedding flowers will always be at their freshest and most beautiful."
"Brides who are drawn to our untamed hedgerow style of arrangements can now learn how to get the look at their wedding by joining one of our Styling the Seasons workshops. A series of four evocative new floral workshops each year, Styling the Seasons will help you uncover the hidden treasures and unique personality of your wedding season and produce floral arrangements with a strong sense of the natural elements around them. When your wedding comes around, you can order flowers by the bucket from us (or your local flower grower) to recreate your designs. Customers who love our aesthetic and ethos, but don't want to attempt floristry themselves, can make an enquiry with Tammy herself, who'll provide and create all of your wedding flowers for the wedding day."
