Amanzoe, Peloponnese Coast, Greece

If the ancient Greeks designed a city today, it might look like Amanzoe. An acropolis of pale marble pavilions perched on the sun-drenched eastern coast of the Peloponnese, the resort has acres of stone-columned walkways, firs rising towards the heavens, and flat roofs planted with lavender and rosemary.

But once you enter your pavilion, notions of antiquity give way to ultra-modern luxury, with window blinds that retract at the touch of a button, and a separate deck with a green marble-lined plunge pool.

Visit the gorgeous spa, staffed by experts in their field, for Greek-themed honey-and-yoghurt facials that leave sun-baked skin preposterously soft. And try the Watsu water massage treatment, where your body is pulled gently through a warm pool until you reach a relaxed, almost meditative state - it's as close to heaven as we mortals will get. Amen to that.

WOW FACTOR: Going for sundowners at the sleek, modern firepit set over the bay. Each of Amanzoe's signature cocktails is named after a Greek god - try the Dionysus made from honey liqueur, fresh grapes and champagne.

The road to Amanzo'e climbs hills dotted with olive trees, goats and tiny stone churches.

A gate set in thick stone walls opens to reveal a marble-pillared reception and a vast shimmering pool beyond, where you'll hop over stepping stones to a restaurant and bar.

And everywhere has staggering, 360-degree views to the mountains beyond and sea below.

The vibe is unapologetically romantic, particularly in the 38 sublime villas or pavilions.

Each has a roof planted with succulents, vaulted ceilings, marble bathrooms, and a pool.

The place has an Aman sense of elegance and luxury; marble corridors lead to the spa, and on to a green-tiled pool, the gym and a wooden-floored Pilates studio.

WOW FACTOR: The sheer space. Villas are huge, the pools are massive and the gardens go on forever: the ultimate antidote to city life.
