Banyan Tree Lang Co Hotel, Vietnam

Think beach resort and Vietnam might not immediately spring to mind - but the recently opened Banyan Tree in Lang Co will change your mind.

The stretch of beach that fringes it might not be blessed with the silkiest sand, but the lush green hills that rise behind the hotel make for a stunning backdrop, and each of the 49 beautifully decorated villas (17 of which face the beach) has a vast sundeck, featuring a raised pavilion with a Jacuzzi for lazy lolling.

If you're feeling energetic, there's an activity centre that can organise a dizzying array of pursuits - including jet-skiing, tennis and parasailing - or, if you're a couple of golf fanatics, you'll love the Nick Faldo-designed 18-hole course. For a more chilled-out vibe, there's a fabulous spa, and the elegant Thu Quan bar serves yummy cocktails (the Aromatic Apple deserves sampling, trust us). Lang Co is within an hour of two Unesco World Heritage sites - the awe-inspiring palaces and temples of the Imperial City of Hué and the impossibly picturesque and well-preserved ancient trading port of Hoi An Ancient Town. There, you can buy everything from silks and scarves to carvings to traditional lanterns.

WOW FACTOR In the wrong hands, this could be cheesy, but the hotel's 'Intimate Moments' experience is just charming. Arrive back at your villa in the evening to find it decked out with dozens of flickering scented candles and an oiled bath sprinkled with rose petals. Yes, please!
