South Tennessee might not be the first place that springs to mind for a foodie couple's flight to paradise, but it ought to be. On the forested slopes of a stretch of the Appalachians known as the Great Smoky Mountains, Blackberry Farm is a resort with food at its heart.

Even if you haven't already been bowled over by the cosy-but-stylish dining room set in an 18th-century Amish barn, you'll be besotted when a starter of potato salad with ramp aioli (leek mayonnaise) and paddlefish roe arrives with a flourish.

The farm has its own dairy, microbrewery and bakery, and the food - think hearth-roasted wreckfish (a bit like seabass) and wood-oven-roasted guinea hen - is at once homely and spectacular.


And if the cuisine isn't a big enough draw, there's the small matter of 9,000 acres of unspoilt mountain terrain and dozens of activities from horse riding to clay-pigeon shooting.

At the end of the evening, retire from the balmy night to your romantic cottage in the woods.
