Canapés might be small, but recently I've been giving them a lot of thought. We're planning to serve these along with chilled bubbly immediately after the ceremony so guests can mingle and enjoy themselves while we head off for photographs.
FOOD AND DRINK IDEAS Clare and Nell from By Worth of Mouth have devised a great short-list of summery canapé ideas for me - some hot and some cold - based around seasonal and where possible, organic ingredients.
Included in the fabulous line up are 'Grilled sea bass on a chilli risotto cake with a tomato and black olive tapanade', 'Seared chicken with avocado salsa on sesame fritter' and a delicious sounding 'Baby asparagus, parsley, lemon and broad bean orzo salad with toasted pine nuts'.
I couldn't fault any of these combinations, but they were quick to add that if I had something particular in mind, they could create a bespoke canapé especially for the occasion. It was clear from the start that this is a catering company with a 'can do' attitude. Cleverly, they brought along an ipad loaded with images of canapés so I could visualize them, which makes so much sense since the look of a canapé is just as important the taste and we all tend to 'eat with our eyes'.
We discussed presentation ideas and I've settled for trays and dishes made of mother of pearl and polished mirror with white china and clear glass for a sophisticated look that will tie in with all the style of my wedding. As well as offering a selection of inspiring canapés and alcoholic cocktails, I was also intrigued by the non-alcoholic cocktail menu, featuring Summer Berryade with Madagascan Vanilla and a Morello Cherry Fizz with Mint and Ginger. Our tee-total guests definitely won't feel left out. This really is going to be a canapé reception with a difference and I can't wait for the tasting.
