Elizabeth Taylor's first wedding dress has sold for £120,000 at auction.
The historic dress was expected to sell for around £50k but sold for more than double that at a fierce bidding war at Christie's yesterday.
A round of applause is said to have rippled through the prestigious South Kensington auction house when a telephone bidder snatched up the iconic gown.
"The dress was sold for £121, 875," said Christi's director Nicolette Tomkinson, "Reflecting its significance in the history of film and fashion."
The auctioned gown was worn by Elizabeth Taylor, then aged 18, to her first wedding. Designed by the legendary costume designer Helen Rose as a gift from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film studio under which Taylor was contracted at the time, her wedding to Conrad Hilton remains in the history books as one of the most iconic weddings of all time.

Elizabeth Taylor's first wedding dress is to be sold at auction this June and is expected to fetch up to £50,000.
The gown, which the 18-year-old bride wore for her wedding to Conrad Hilton, was created by the legendary costume designer Helen Rose as a gift from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film studio under which Taylor was contracted.
The gown will be sold at Christie's in London on June 26 as part of the auction house's 'Pop Culture' sale.
Formed of 25 yards of shell-white satin sprinkled with bugle beads and tiny seed pearls trailed by 15 yards of satin train, the gown itself is believed to have taken 15 seamstresses up to three months to complete.
The matching veil is made of 10 yards of shimmering silk illusion net attached to a pearl-covered Juliet cap.
The 1950 wedding was touted as the social event of the year, said to have 'more stars than there are in heaven' attending.
Taylor and Hilton's marriage lasted only eight months and the actress went on to marry a further seven times, most memorably to Richard Burton twice.
Helen Rose went on to create Grace Kelly's iconic wedding dress for her marriage to Prince Rainier.
