Four Seasons, Lisbon, Portugal

Located in the heart of Lisbon, this über-swanky hotel delivers on every level: beautiful scenery, bags of culture, great food and a cracking beach.

It's also only a short walk from the hip Old Town, where you'll find a string of nonchalantly elegant bars and restaurants. Our favourite of these is the Restaurante 100 Maneiras where there's no menu, and plates change daily - just sit back and let the 10 course tasting dishes arrive. But also be sure to try the hotel's Varanda Restaurant overlooking the Eduardo VII Park, where the gin-tasting menu will take you from lunchtime to party time.

No trip to Lisbon would be complete without gorging on the dreamy custard tarts known as Pastéis de nata - visit the Pastéis de Belém for some of the best, but be prepared for long queues.

After a day exploring, retreat to the ESPA Spa or, if you have energy to spare, the rooftop running track. There's no better vantage point for a Lisbon sunset.

WOW FACTOR: The hotel can book you on a vintage motorcycle tour of the city with your own personal guide. Helmets on and cameras at the ready!

GO: A double room costs from £285; TAP Portugal ( return flights start at £141.

FLIGHT TIME: 2 hours, 30 minutes
