This simple but seriously stylish Indian Ocean idyll, co-owned by Brit fashion designer Ellis Flyte, is set in a remote corner of the clove-scented island of Pemba.

The 18 bungalows are on stilted platforms with makuti (thatched) roofs; inside it's old-school safari style, with mosquito nets, dark timber floors and ceiling fans. The friendly local staff are supervised by former Groucho Club manager Hannes Wolters.

There are few distractions here, though a kayaking trip to nearby mangrove forests or an early-morning dolphin safari may tempt you away from your sunlounger. Alternatively, take a sunset cruise on a traditional dhow, or sneak off for a beachside candlelit dinner for two.

Wow factor: Spend a morning snorkelling or diving off the beautiful beaches on Misali, a desert island just a short speedboat ride away.

Flight time: From 10 hours 10 minutes via Nairobi.
