The famous Pink Sands Resort has occupied the north of the Bahamas' Harbour Island since 1956.

It's been blown away in hurricanes, rebuilt, gone tatty and now refurbished with 25 exquisite cottages designed by Biba founder Barbara Hulanicki, including the private Simini Cottage.

Take a walk (or golf buggy) into Dunmore Town at around 9pm - the scent of jasmine hits you as if you're at the perfume counter at Liberty. Then head back to the hotel's Blue Bar, which overlooks the immaculate beach (it really does glow pink).

The hotel can organise boat trips and picnics, even dropping you on a deserted island for the afternoon.

It's so peaceful that we recorded the sound of the water lapping the shore, and still listen to it. It never fails to lower the pulse and make us smile.

WOW FACTOR: The garden restaurant - at night, hundreds of candles illuminate the miniature dogwood and spider lilies.

FLIGHT TIME: 10 hours.

GO: Scott Dunn offers seven nights in a Garden Cottage from £2,445 per person, B&B. Includes flights and transfers.
