Few places marry a rich history and hip design as confidently as Raas, which bills itself as India's only boutique hotel within a walled city.
This 300-year-old mansion in Jodhpur's atmospheric old town has been reborn rather than merely renovated. The 32 rooms and seven suites occupy four original structures and a trio of new buildings made out of the same gorgeous red chittar sandstone.
Two teams of award-winning architects combined forces to create a look that mixes minimalism with Mughal-inspired designs. Hand-carved latticed screens conceal suites with every conceivable luxury (from huge stone tubs to plasma TVs) while the infinity pool in the courtyard is lined with loungers under a white muslin canopy.
It's so peaceful within Raas's ancient compound you could forget it sits right in the city centre in the shadow of Jodhpur's icon, Mehrangarh Fort.
Almost every room in the hotel boasts a view of it, but Baradari, one of Raas's two alfresco restaurants, has the best spot of all. Newlyweds have been known to linger on the roof of this multi-pillared pavilion into the small hours, and who can blame them?
