Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa, Maldives

02 Nov 2012

Villingili is unique in the Maldives thanks to its size and location, lying at the most southerly tip of Addu Atoll, just south of the equator.

Its 12 hectares boast a profusion of flora and fauna, including coconut and Banyan trees and native flowers and birds, drawn to the lagoons. The villas are jaw-dropping in their dimensions (each is at least 166sqm) and luxe feel.

As well as 25 nearby dive sites there are also 'snorkel gardens' close to the shore. With beach-side dining, an Asian-fusion restaurant, a yacht for cocktails and the Maldives' first nine-hole golf course, Villingili will keep you amused.

Cycle to the five neighbouring islands via a 17km wooden road and enjoy a slice of local life as fishermen bring their daily catch into a café (we loved the chilli prawns and fresh tuna). If 'castaway island' sounds a bit too slow, this is definitely your kind of Maldives.

WOW FACTOR: The 'tree-house villas' - three metres above the ground - are unique.
