Stein’s At Trevone Farm, Cornwall, UK

The Rick Stein empire has surpassed itself with its latest offering - right down to the welcome hamper to top all welcome hampers (local cheeses, homemade jams, chutney, fresh eggs - there's even a blanket for the dog).

This cluster of contemporary houses in the postcard-perfect village of Trevone, a few miles from Padstow, really has it nailed when it comes to family-moons. Each of the four nautical-themed cottages sleeps up to six (except the four-bedroomed Trenouth, which accommodates eight) in total comfort, and you'll love the big, sociable ground-floor living space with its flagstone flooring and huge dining table; the comfy kitchen is stocked with enough tools and utensils to invite the entire village around for supper.

It's a cosy cocoon against the whirly, salty winds, with underfloor heating to keep little feet warm after a paddle in the sea, which is a joyful two-minute stroll away at Trevone Bay. The interiors by Jill Stein are clearly a labour of love, with sackcloth poufs, under-the-sea artwork and oversized, squishy sofas meant for the masses.

Don't forget to book the kids (and yourselves!) on to a cooking course at the famous Padstow Seafood School. Chef Keith will look after them a treat, and yes, you will be cooking live lobster. Then retire to your cottage and have a barbecue on the wide-open terrace, which has the kind of views you'd expect to see on a retro 'we're all going on a summer holiday' seaside poster.

WOW FACTOR: The slick babysitting (and dog-sitting) service - they really do know how to make things as easy as possible.

GO: A three-bedroom cottage costs from £515 (based on a three-night stay);
