The Chedi, Andermatt, Switzerland

Andermatt is fast becoming the new place to ski and be seen. Sophisticated snow-bunnies who love the mountain scene but hate the twee hotels that so often come with it should head for this big-hitter. The Chedi is cosy and traditional on the outside, but glamorous and opulent inside, with a world-class restaurant and spa to boot. An hour and a half from Zurich, Andermatt is easily accessible but feels remote, surrounded on all sides by the soaring Swiss Alps.

Go in winter for skiing (ambitious skiers should head to the electrifying Gemsstock mountain), snow-kiting, ice climbing and ice-skating, or in summer for golf, hiking and swimming in the wild. In the next two years, six high-end hotels will open, plus a cable car linking the resort with the village of Sedrun, doubling the ski area. Off-piste tip: grab dashing Frankii as your guide - he won't let you down.

WOW FACTOR: Sipping on a post-ski 'Chedi Devil' - a mix of coffee, sugar and schnapps. You'll be buzzing all night.
