The Jalousie Plantation, St Lucia, West Indies

12 Apr 2011

It's hard to find a more romantic setting than The Jalousie Plantation. Sat between the spectacular twin peaks of the Pitons, on the water's edge and framed by rainforest, it's picture perfect.

Originally an 18th-century sugar plantation, it retains much of its French colonial charm, with white wooden bungalows dotted across the hillside. Interiors are all about laid-back elegance: white sofas; a massive four-poster bed; and white voile curtains blowing in the breeze.

Below, the crystal waters are home to an array of tropical fish and coral and if you want to get closer, pay a visit to the PADI diving centre.

Wind down in the new Rainforest spa, a collection of wooden huts on stilts set within the rainforest, which offers treatments using local produce: coconut (to exfoliate); bananas (to firm); aloe vera (to rejuvenate); and cocoa butter (to heal and hydrate). You'll leave looking picture perfect, too.

Wow factor: The über-cool Cane Bar, for cocktails.

Flight time: From eight hours.
