The opening of Kooddoo Airport last September means that the remote, unspoilt southern atolls of the Maldives are just a 55-minute flight from Malé.
The Residence Maldives only opened here last April, but the 94 beachfront and over-water villas have a more established feel than other new starts in the archipelago, and the resort is a relaxed yet refined affair. Take time out at the Clarins spa, or go kayaking, paddleboarding or windsurfing.
The big draw is the 25 pristine dive sites; the coral teems with life - manta rays, turtles and rainbow-coloured fish - and snorkelling is equally spectacular.
Afterwards you can dine in-villa or feet-in-the-sand, but The Falhumaa is the jewel in The Residence's culinary crown. Feast alfresco on lobster risotto with nothing but the ocean and sky between you and Indonesia.
WOW FACTOR: Feeling very, very far from the rest of the world - you'll be among the first to discover the pristine reefs of the Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
FLIGHT TIME: 12 hours.
