If Grand Cayman is excellent for divers, and Jamaica caters for the party-loving crowd, then Anguilla is the Caribbean island for those after some laid-back chic.

Not only is it home to vast stretches of the whitest sand, but the Viceroy - a design- and food-lover's paradise. It's got the looks: natural-luxe interiors of marble and textured wood. It's got the flash factor: sunken infinity pools, sleek spa and wow bathrooms. It's also got a big shot of gourmet glitz: eat your way around the five restaurants, which serve a mix of Caribbean and Asian dishes.

The beach side Half Shell is a super lunch spot, while Cobà gets our vote for supper (the wagyu beef is incredible). But if you want the real Anguillan vibe, head to the local beach bars for rum punch and reggae.

WOW FACTOR: Follow the lead of Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr and honeymoon in a beachfront villa. They're huge (the one-bedroom villas have 124sqm to get lost in), stunning and ultra-private.

On the sleepy island of Anguilla, the arrival of the glam Viceroy caused a stir. Part-Miami, part-Bali and 100 per cent LA fabulous, the 166-room hotel is on a headland with a sugar-white beach on each side.

The outside and indoor spaces merge, with wide open-air walkways, bars and restaurants, and floor-to-ceiling windows in the suites, studios and villas. Modern furniture in cool neutrals is lifted with African artwork and driftwood pieces. While signature restaurant Cobà specialises in amazing seafood, the fabulously laid-back beach bar The Half Shell offers frozen cocktails, sushi and ceviche. And the spa is as decadent as you'd expect, housed in a two-storey beachfront villa of its own. Whether you feel like massages and facials for two in a couples' treatment room or a lesson in meditation or healthy cooking, the spa has it all. Wow factor: The lack of direct flights means Anguilla is an unspoilt barefoot-chic Caribbean isle. Flight time: From 11 hours 30 minutes via Antigua.
