Eat, sleep, safari, repeat: our mantra for the perfect honeymoon. Zulu Camp at Shambala Private Game Reserve prides itself on flexibility, though. You make the decisions on when and what to eat. Game drive, or sunbathe by the river and plunge pool?
You would, of course, be crazy not to leave the gates - this is The Lion King in real life! We saw two of the Big Five minutes after entering the 10,000- hectare reserve, and came within metres of lions napping. The rangers are hugely informative and you're given a beautifully illustrated book so that you can tick off rare black rhinos, elegant giraffe, baby zebras and leopard as you spot them.
Camp is designed like an African village, and although the eight thatched chalets look rustic from the exterior, inside you'll find simplistic luxury. Personal butler, outdoor rain shower… this is in no way roughing it.
Romantic excursions include a champagne bush picnic and a sunset cruise with bathing hippos, both included in your stay. When night falls, gather round the campfire for safari stories over a traditional braai (barbecue).
WOW FACTOR: Take a bumpy but brilliant hour ride on one of the adopted elephants, headed by the majestic bull elephant Mickey. It's an extra cost, but worth it for the facts and photos.
GO: A chalet costs from £725 per night, all-inclusive; www.zulucamp.co.za. Includes private game drives, bush walks and river cruises.
FLIGHT TIME: 11 hours
