One&Only Le Saint Géran, Mauritius
The hotel game in Mauritius is pretty strong, but located on the private Belle Mare peninsula between a lagoon and the tumbling ocean, One&Only Le Saint Géran is a cut above the rest. The first snazzy hotel to spring up on the island four decades ago, it’s had plenty of time to perfect the honeymoon formula, and after a nine-month refurb, its chic rooms, with details inspired by plantation houses and sugar-cane factories, look better than ever.
Everything here runs like clockwork. Tightly folded bed corners? Tick. Immaculately combed, daisy-petal-white beaches? Tick. World-class restaurants where the chefs ensure steaks are drizzled with just the right amount of truffle jus? Tick, tick, tick. The miso-brushed red snapper at pan-Asian Tapasake and fruity macarons at L’Artisan bakery are special, too. They really know how to make the best use of the blinding beaches here, with so much more than sunbathing and paddling to be done: pro-led workouts at Club One (one of the Indian Ocean’s best gyms), stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, laser sailing… the list goes on.
If you don’t fancy getting wet, head out in a glass-bottomed boat – or, if you need to tear your eyes away from the dazzling sand, join a wildlife ranger on a waterfall-filled hike through the Mauritian rainforest to search for pink pigeons and Aldabra tortoises, or indulge in skin-tingling facials by Biologique Recherche in the spa. Mauritius’ best, it seems, just got even better.
