Let's get this straight: you can wear sunscreen for your face on your wedding day (in fact, it's a must) and still avoid flashback but there are certain rules you need to follow in picking the best sunscreen for your face. We all know that we need to wear face sunscreen when we're on holiday, especially on the beach. But did you know that you should wear it every day? 'Anyone over the age of six-months should use a sunscreen daily' to protect their skin, says the Skin Cancer Foundation. But why do we need to protect our skin? The answer: UVA and UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis (the thickest and deepest part of your skin) and cause premature ageing whilst UVBs damage the superficial layers of skin, causing it to 'burn'. UVB rays are the chief culprits of skin cancer. When preparing for your wedding, then, it's essential to choose a sunscreen for your face that protects against both types of radiation (which all of our favourites do). There are two types of sunscreen formulas: mineral and classic, and they both protect the skin in different ways. On your wedding day, you're always going to want to choose a classic sunscreen because of the way it absorbs and disperses UVA/UVB rays. Mineral or 'physical' sunscreens work by using ingredients including Zinc and Titanium Dioxide which scatter and reflect the rays, causing a ghostly-white flashback in photographs - not exactly ideal for your wedding pics. As a general rule, the higher the SPF factor, the higher percentage protection you're getting (SPF 15, 93%, SPF 50, 99%), so if in doubt, the higher the better. These facial sunscreen formulas are tried-and-tested by the Brides beauty team and are 100% wedding-day worthy. Simply pop a layer over your skincare before applying makeup: see you, sun-scorched cheeks!
