An Epic Destination Wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Farryn Weiner and Jake Truen’s relationship has taken them all over the globe. It started in Miami in 2010, when Jake saw Farryn at a bagel shop before Ultra Music Festival and said to his friend, “Who is that girl? I want to marry her.” But as Farryn admits, it took six years (and a trip to California) for that infatuation to turn into a relationship. “At Coachella in 2016, Jake ran over to where I was sitting and said, ‘I love you, get up,’ ” she recalls. “We haven’t separated since.” In fact, the couple, who call New York City home, have since traveled to countless destinations together, including Tulum, Mexico, and Mykonos, Greece—and, perhaps most noteworthy, Rajasthan, India, where Jake proposed in an ancient chhatri pavilion lit with more than 3,000 candles. “It was over-the-top and a dream come true,” Farryn says.

For their wedding on October 27, 2018, she and Jake invited 175 guests to join them in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico—one of the first places they visited together—for a three-day event at the new Montage Los Cabos. “We were inspired by our experiences, our travels, and our favorite things,” she explains. “We pulled in elements from all to transport our friends and family to another world: our dream version of a beach, desert, and jungle.”

Farryn Weiner, the Insta influencer @jetsetfarryn, and Jake Truen, the cofounder of a restaurant in New York City, were the first couple to say “I do” at the recently opened Montage Los Cabos. They embraced their beach setting by having their names written in the sand.

The couple's invitation suite included custom designs by Julie Song Ink and an illustrated map by the bride's friend Minali Chatani. At the rehearsal dinner, guests also received red bracelets with special messages.

The festivities began oceanside with a spiritual ceremony, followed by a shoes-optional bash featuring tacos, teepees, and mezcal. Before Thursday’s beach party, the couple’s friend performed a sunset ocean ritual inspired by one they’d seen at Scorpios Mykonos, a hotel and restaurant in Mykonos, Greece. “It was a magical, mystical night that set the tone for the weekend,” says Farryn, who wore a metallic dress by Sid Neigum.

The next night, everyone ventured off the property “for a taste of Cabo” at a white-themed rehearsal dinner set in a mango orchard at Acre, a boutique hotel on 25 acres of greenery. Farryn wore a Marina Moscone gown from Moda Operandi, while Jake wore a custom look by 100% Capri paired with suede espadrilles by Bottega Veneta.

The meal was served family style as guests gave speeches. "We wanted to everything to feel very intimate, personal, and warm," explains the bride.

On the big day, Farryn got ready with her bridesmaids back at the Montage. She gifted each attendant a personalized set of Sloan Store pajamas.

The bride wore a custom gown by Lee Petra Grebenau x Spina Bride. "I knew exactly what I wanted: sophisticated, modern, sexy and romantic," she says. "I wanted something that would feel like me at this moment of time in my life." Her favorite part? The A-line skirt! "It had just the right amount of volume, flow, and sheerness," she adds. "In the sunlight, it was completely see-through. But at night, it had the perfect amount of airiness to it. I felt like I was floating."

The bride completed her look with "snowflake"-shaped diamond earrings, Sophia Webster heels, and no veil. "I had one there in case I wanted to wear it, but I woke up the morning of and decided I was more 'me' without it," she says.

The couple did a first look before the ceremony, during which Jake saw Farryn's dress for the first time. "It was a total surprise," she says.

The bride and her ’maids dressed in white so as not to take away from the venue’s natural beauty. Farryn’s sister Austyn Weiner, at left, wore Rebecca de Ravenel, while her twin, Amanda Alagem, dressed in Olivier Theyskens. Each carried a bouquet of baby's breath.

The groom took the day's "black untied" dress code quite literally in a Saint Laurent suit and (untied!!) tie. He also gave a tie to each of his groomsmen as a gift.

After family photos and group pics, Farryn and Jake posed for a few shots—just the two of them. "We didn’t do a ton of posed photos, they weren't a priority for us," she says. "We wanted our photographer to document the weekend naturally."

The ceremony space was designed so guests would feel present. Everyone sat on couches instead of chairs, and a few took part by reading intentions they had written for the couple. "The ceremony design was very intimate and personal. We wanted our guests to be comfortable, and invested in the moment with us," says the bride. "We designed a semi-circle style space with white carpet, and white semi-circle of couches instead of chairs." (After the ceremony, Farryn admits that a few guests came up to her and said, "I felt like we were watching a movie, and I didn't want to get up!")

The chuppah was decorated with white orchids, underneath a custom wooden dome. "While a chuppah has four sharp corners, a dome is soft, circular and never ending," she explains. "We loved the polarity of the designs and meanings."

Farryn made her grand entrance to "Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” by Kina Grannis, and walked alongside her parents, Sunny and Arthur Weiner. (Her mom wore Elizabeth Filmore!)

The couple wed at sunset in a Reform Jewish ceremony, sharing vows they'd written together. "We wanted them to be the things we always say that are important to us," she says. "We call them our non-negotiables, and they are our roadmap for our life together."

The couple thought of the ceremony and reception as part one of the evening, so they skipped cocktail hour and went straight into dinner. They also made the two locations feel connected with custom domes (one a chuppah, the other a bar) and an installation of more than 500 floating LEDs above the dinner area. The space was complete with "pampas clouds," an idea dreamed up by Mindy Weiss. (Fun fact: It took four days to build the structure that held all the decor!)

Dancing took place atop flooring customized with illustrations of sand dunes (inspired by the couple's desert engagement). The design, by Julie Song, was also featured on their invitation suite and wedding website.

Afterward they dined on a Mediterranean-inspired menu under clouds of pampas grass, with dancing in between courses. Jake and Farryn selected "VCR" by the XX for their first dance, while Farryn and her dad chose "Blackbird" by the Beatles. However, the most memorable song of the night was the Game of Thrones theme song, played by Mala Rumba.

After dinner, the couple had a surprise for their guests: a change of venue! Everyone entered through a bamboo tunnel to find a transformed ballroom covered with palm fronds and more than 200 disco balls. Farryn’s sister Austyn, an artist, created a neon sign for the disco-jungle-themed dancing space.

The bride slipped into a party-ready Jonathan Simkhai dress late in the evening. “We had many musical acts planned, but DJ Vikas was nailing it, so he played for hours,” she says. “No one would leave the party!”

Even when it was all over, the newlyweds kept going with a buddymoon at Ondalinda festival, a music and arts event in Costa Careyes, Mexico. “We thought of it as an after-party to the wedding,” says Farryn of the two-week trip, which included stops at Hacienda de San Antonio and Nômade Tulum for a friend’s wedding. “Celebrating with our friends was so us! We have our whole life ahead of us for a honeymoon.”
