Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer may have had a whirlwind romance, but this couple is in it for the long haul. They initially met through a mutual connection and hit it off later down the road. Now, the comedian and the chef are parents of an adorable and rambunctious toddler, Gene. From their first meeting to their secret wedding, here is a complete timeline of Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer's relationship.

  • The couple originally met through Amy's personal assistant, which also happens to be Chris's sister. It’s unclear exactly when the two were introduced, but they didn’t start dating until 2017.
  • On February 13, 2018, just four days after publicly confirming their relationship, Amy and Chris tied the knot in a secret wedding ceremony in Malibu, California.
  • On May 5, 2019, the couple announced the arrival of their son Gene.

November 2017: First Spotting Together

In the fall of 2017, Entertainment Tonight reported the first sighting of the couple out to dinner in New York City. Although this was the first public spotting of the two, they actually met at an earlier, undisclosed date through Amy's personal assistant Molly—who is Chris's sister.

Amy revealed on the Howard Stern Show that during a trip to Martha’s Vineyard her assistant suggested that her brother, a chef, should come to Amy's vacation house to cook dinner for her. The two really hit it off after planning a birthday party together for Amy's friend, comedian Rachel Feinstein.

Late 2017: Shacking Up

While the world was still pretty unaware of their relationship, Amy later admitted that the two were more serious than the public knew. During an April 2018 interview on The View, Amy said they had already been living together for six months.

"We have known each other for about a year now and we’ve been living together already for six months,” she said. “So you know it’s not a long courtship but it’s not like we had a great weekend in Vegas and threw in the towel."

February 2018: Amy Confirms Their Relationship

A few months after their first spotting, Amy confirmed their relationship in a since-deleted Instagram photo of the two kissing at Ellen DeGeneres’ 60th birthday party, according to Bustle.

February 13, 2018: A Secret Wedding

Just four days after confirming the relationship, Amy and Chris tied the knot in a secret ceremony in Malibu, California. She told Howard Stern in April that she planned the nuptials in three or four days and texted family and friends about the event, saying, "I’m getting married on Tuesday. I hope you can come." Despite the last minute notice, a lot of the comedian's famous friends, like Jennifer Lawrence, were able to make it to the intimate and quick ceremony.

October 2018: They’re Pregnant

In a since-deleted Instagram post from October 2018, Amy revealed that she was pregnant. And of course, the comedian stayed true to her brand for the announcement, revealing the exciting news by posting a photo of her and her husband's heads on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bodies because they also announced that they were expecting around the same time.

May 5, 2019: Gene Attell Fischer Is Born

On May 6, 2018, Amy announced that she and Chris had welcomed their baby to the world. Markle and Prince Harry announced the birth of Archie the same day, so keeping in true Schumer fashion she wrote, "10:55 pm last night. Our royal baby was born,” in a now-deleted Instagram post. A couple days later she shared their son’s name: Gene Attell Fischer, which they later changed. (More on that below!)

January 9, 2020: Amy’s IVF Journey

In a very candid Instagram post, the comedian revealed she was going through IVF in hopes of giving baby Gene a sibling. “I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional,” she wrote. “If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do.”

The photo showed her midsection, which was bruised from the treatment. She continued, “We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling.”

April 2020: A Name Change

Less than a year after Gene’s birth, the new parents decided to change their son's middle name because of an unfortunate coincidence. During an April interview with Howard Stern, Amy told Stern that they realized, after the fact, that their son’s full name “Gene Attell Fischer” sounded too similar to “genital fissure.” The comedic actress added that it “never dawned” on her. So they changed his middle name to David in honor of her father Gordon David Schumer and her friend and fellow comedian, Dave Attel, whom Gene was named after originally.

May 2020: Amy Learns to Cook

The couple partnered with the Food Network to create a cooking show from their home in Martha’s Vineyard called Amy Schumer Learns to Cook. On the show, Chris, a master chef, whips up some meals with a little help from his sous-chef Amy.

February 13, 2021: Three-Year Anniversary

The couple celebrated their three-year wedding anniversary on February 13, 2020 and in Amy's typical funny-girl approach, she posted a sarcastic photo of the two with very straight faces in celebration of the big milestone. Her caption read very simply, “Married for 3 years.” We love her ironic social media humor!
