What do Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton, and the Met Gala “best dressed” list have in common? They’ve all worn Prabal Gurung. The Nepalese designer certainly knows his way around a special occasion. Clients—including countless celebrities, heads of state, and even a bride or two—go to Prabal when they want to make an impact. His glamorous silhouettes and eye for color are unmistakable on the red carpet and, basically, a guarantee that your gown will stand out in a crowd.

With that much experience creating dresses for big nights, it’s no surprise Gurung’s next venture is bridal fashion. In April 2021, the brand announced its first-ever wedding line, debuting alongside the Spring 2022 collection. According to Gurung, his years of designing for awards shows and events were ideal for understanding what couples want to wear on their big day. “I needed to get to know the psyche of what someone goes through when the spotlight is on them—hence I felt ready and prepared to launch a bridal collection now,” he shares with Brides.

The designer’s signature optimism and glamour telegraph immediately: Prabal Gurung bridal is unabashedly inspired by love. Collection notes include “an ode to those who have been able to grasp what it is to love someone, as well as themselves, unreservedly,” and Gurung developed the line with friends and loved ones who delayed weddings very much in mind. “I wanted to take on the responsibility of properly celebrating all the incredible individuals who have walked in our lives,” he tells Brides.

Commitment to inclusivity and representation remains at the forefront of all Gurung’s collections, including bridal. “Prabal Gurung is for everyone—offering all a seat at the table,” he shares with Brides. In keeping with that mission, all the brand’s designs are created and produced in New York City. What’s more, the brand's first bridal lookbook truly celebrates transparency by including extensive notes on casting and staff diversity. “The stories of our seamstress and atelier hands are those of immigrants and minority groups—and the model we chose for our lookbook shoot,” explains Gurung.

This collection is for any bride who wants to make a red carpet-level statement walking down the aisle. Signature Prabal design codes appear throughout in button detailing, a-line skirts, and voluminous separates, along with gorgeous non-traditional options like detachable sleeves and skirts. That versatility and functionality feels very 2021, as people eschew tradition and rethink their wedding plans. After all, “my brand has never been gender-normative,” says Gurung. “And I’ve never wanted to dictate who is wearing my designs.”
