From the moment you board Soneva's private plane at Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport, you know that you're in for an extraordinary time.
On touchdown, you'll take a five-minute boat ride to Thailand's fourth-largest (but least-populated) island, Koh Kood. Here, you'll be met by a host, and whisked off to your room in a battery-operated buggy, which is then yours to whizz around the resort. 'Room' is an understatement: the resort has 35 villas, each with their own bedroom(s), outdoor bathroom and private pool.
There are no news channels on TV - and the ethos of the place is 'no news, no shoes' - so you can switch off totally. The resort operates on 'Soneva time': clocks are set an hour ahead of the rest of Thailand, giving you an extra hour of sunlight each day. Once the sun has disappeared, gaze at the stars from the observatory.
WOW FACTOR The Willy Wonka-esque chocolate room, a free cave of ingenious cocoa creations, is the stuff of fantasies.
GO A Bayview Pool Villa Suite costs from £730 www.soneva.com; return flights on the hotel's private plane from Don Mueang Airport start at £350

The huge beach is quiet, the climate is dreamy, the jungle is lush and the food is exciting. And this resort is seven-star-rated, which means you won't want to leave your villa.
Each one is a private home over two floors, in the forest, or near the ocean, with an outdoor bathroom, private day-beds, large infinity pool and a golf buggy.
There's plenty to fill your time: the spa is heavenly, there are daily yoga and beach workouts, four restaurants, an ice-cream parlour with 65 flavours, Thai cookery classes, visits to villages and waterfalls, sunset cruises, watersports and diving trips. And don't miss the inflatable outdoor cinema, perfect for a starlit evening.
This tropical experience is a genius mix of über-luxury and relaxed fun.
Wow factor: Tree Pod Dining. Be hoisted up into the treetops for a picnic inside a 'basket' with sofas and table.
